Course Description
This elective is offered to medical students in their final year,
who have a foundation of knowledge and experience in clinical
medicine. The student is assigned to a physician preceptor,
and is closely involved in patient care, from the initial
evaluation, diagnosis and treatment, inpatient management
when necessary, to discharge and follow-up.
Students make inpatient rounds on approximately twenty patients,
beginning at 8:00 AM daily. After rounds, students will,
with supervision, perform procedures (such as lumbar punctures,
thoracentesis, etc.) as appropriate. The student will
then participate in the care of outpatients and emergency
patients throughout the remainder of each day. Student
are encouraged to use reference texts to supplement their
knowledge as they encounter clinical problems. Students will
participate in after hours "on call" duties, with
physician supervision. Students will first assist in
surgery. In each area, as appropriate, the student will obtain
history, perform a physical exam, and present his/her findings,
assessment, and recommendations to the supervising physician.
